1//  Beam: crowdfunding for homeless people

Beam is a new platform that allows people to donate money towards training and opportunities for homeless people, based in part on profiles of those people detailing, among other things, how they came to be homeless. The idea is to build empathy with homeless people as human beings, as well as helping them with financial contributions.

3// The Uber for ... ambulances

“The Uber for …” can be an annoying phrase. But Flare, as the Uber for ambulances in Kenya, might well be an exception. It’s reduced response times from an average of 162 minutes to 15-20 minutes, of starters …


4// Shopping for refugees this Christmas

Choose Love, created by Help Refugees, is the world’s first store that allows people to buy products for refugees. Every purchase made goes towards a similar item for a refugee, delivered via one of the 80+ partner projects Help Refugees works with. Choose Love has an online store and a popup at W1F 8HS, London.


5//  An open-data standards directory

GovEx, has created an international open-data standards agency, designed to provide cities with best practice in terms of how to present data to the public. This goes far beyond formatting: at stake is the ability to ensure open data as relevant and useable as possible to citizens.


6//  Crowdsourcing in investigative journalism

One of the lesser discussed applications of crowdsourcing is muckraking: (among other things) the investigative-journalism act of exposing corrupt regimes and power structures. Journalists are becoming more skilled at using social media and other digital tools to solicit expertise, tips and input from readers, helped by a growing ethos of citizen journalism, or at least citizen participation in journalism.


7//  Tech giants join forces for hybrid electric plane

Airbus, Rolls-Royce and Siemens are to develop hybrid electric engine plane technology as part of a push towards cleaner aviation. The firms want to fly a demonstrator version of the plane by 2020, with a commercial application by 2025. Firms are racing to develop electric engines for planes after pressure from the EU to cut aviation pollution.


8// The rise of dockless bike-sharing

Dockless bike-sharing schemes have started popping up in various cities, including London, in the form of Ofo. Given a number of convincing arguments for, will dockless schemes come to replace docked ones?


9//  The app helping fight corruption in Colombia

Elefantes Blancos is a Colombian app designed to make it easy for citizens to report so-called “white elephants”: neglected, abandoned or overfilled state infrastructure projects. 54 such projects have since been identified, with 15 having since been closed at a total cost of $408,792.


10// Journal exploring the visual culture of Mark Zuckerberg launches

Last but by no means leat, The California Review of Images and Mark Zuckerberg - a journal that represents "an academic examination of the visual culture of Mark Zuckerberg” - has launched its first issue. It features explorations of an early Zuck profile pic, among other things. Check it out!
